Pursuant to various laws enacted by the legislature, NJ citizens must register with their local police department in order to obtain a Firearms Identification Card (F-ID Card) and to purchase or possess a firearm. As a result, Sgt. John Carty oversees the registration process, which is often lengthy and complicated for many residents.
For easiest results in properly processing an application for an F-ID Card, a Purchaser's Permit, or other related paperwork required by the State of New Jersey, residents should contact Sgt. John Carty in advance. For convenience, a basic application and appointment form is available at the Police Desk, twenty-four hours per day. Residents will need to complete this form in order to begin the registration process. Additionally, residents will have to make an appointment with Sgt. Carty for fingerprinting, pursuant to requirements set forth under New Jersey Law.
Here is a brief summary of the most common registrations made by residents:
Firearms Identification Cards (F-ID Card): an F-ID Card is required when purchasing long arms. In order to process your request for a F-ID Card, you will need the following when you register:
- First time applicants will need to have a money order for $60.25 made payable to 'Division of State Police - S.B.I.' for fingerprint processing. (Only one money order is needed if you are applying for both a Firearms ID Card and Pistol Purchase Permit);
- First time applicants will need to have the name, address and phone number of 2 personal references that can be verified;
- Proof of residency in the Boro of Hillsdale.
Change of Address or Duplicate Firearms ID Cards: in order to replace an F-ID Card or to edit the address as it appears on an F-ID Card, you will need the following when you register:
- A money order for $18 made payable to 'Division of State Police - S.B.I.' for criminal history check processing;
- Proof of residency in the Boro of Hillsdale.
A Pistol Purchase Permit: is required for each pistol that a citizen wishes to purchase. Pistol Purchase Permits are initially valid for 90 days and can be renewed for an additional 90 days. In order to process a request for a Pistol Purchase Permit(s), you will need to bring the following to register:
- First time applicants: a money order for $54 made payable to 'Division of State Police - S.B.I.' for fingerprint processing. (Only one money order in the amount of $54 is needed if you are applying for both a Firearms ID Card and Pistol Purchase Permit, plus an additional $5 for each Pistol Purchase Permit);
- The name, address and phone number of 2 personal references that can be verified;
- Proof of residency in the Boro of Hillsdale.
Returning Applicants: in order to obtain additional permits, registrants will need the following:
- A money order for $18 made payable to 'Division of State Police - S.B.I.' for criminal history check processing;
- The name, address and phone number of 2 personal references that can be verified;
- Proof of residency in the Boro of Hillsdale.
