Pursuant to state law, The Hillsdale Police Department offers residents a Temporary Handicapped Parking Permit under certain circumstances. While the State of New Jersey Division of Motor Vehicles offers residents permanent Handicapped Parking status, the registration process for that permit can be lengthy. Often residents will need temporary and/or immediate handicapped status, and cannot wait for the permanent status from the DMV, or do not qualify for permanent status.
As a result, the HPD can grant temporary status to residents so that they may cope with disability. The Handicapped Parking Permit provides a clearly recognizable handicapped placard which, when displayed on the motor-vehicle, allows parking in a Handicapped Parking Zone .
The following criteria must be met in order to be eligible for a Temporary Handicapped Parking Permit :
- a temporary loss of muscle/joint movement;
- permanent disability requiring immediate handicapped status
- under the care of a physician who can attest to the disability/condition
Application for a Temporary Handicapped Parking Permit can be made at Police Headquarters. Applicants must complete the application with a $4.00 check or money order payable to 'N.J. Division of Motor Vehicles'. All applications must be signed by the applicant to certify that the statements are true.
A medical doctor or podiatrist must also certify that: the applicant has been examined and has temporarily lost the use of one or more limbs or is temporarily disabled as to be unable to ambulate without the aid of assisting device or mobility is otherwise temporarily limited.
Temporary Handicapped Parking Permits are valid for six months; they
may be renewed after six months. For questions about the application, contact Records Clerk Lou Spagnoli at (201)664-4200 x5039.
