The Fatal Accident Investigation Unit of the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office serves Bergen County area police departments with the tedious responsibility of handling a fatal accident scene. From accident reconstruction to successful prosecution in court, the FAIU is a team of police officers from around the County who handle a fatality on Bergen County roads from start to finish. Since most police officers do not have the varied and comprehensive training needed to assess a fatal or near-fatal accident scene, the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office FAIU members are available for these extensive investigations. With highly technical instruments and a lot of old-fashioned math equations, FAIU investigators combine technology and geometry to reconstruct a traffic accident, and pinpoint cause and blame.
The Hillsdale Police Department's own Ptl. Brian McKeever joined the Bergen County Prosecutor's Fatal Accident Investigation Unit in April 2003. Ptl. McKeever's training was arduous, but now certifies him to investigate fatal collisions. Ptl. McKeever rotates on a monthly on-call basis with the other FAIU investigators, called to all different parts of Bergen County, assisting with fatal and near-fatal accident scenes. Since its inception in the early 1980's, the FAIU has had several members from the Hillsdale Police Department including Chief Frank Mikulski, who was the first member of the FAIU and led the first investigation undertaken by the Unit. In addition, Sgt. Paul Stuckey is also a former member of the FAIU .
Seen above, the FAIU's easily recognizable 'Fatal Truck' is rotated to the on-call investigator each month so that he or she has all the necessary equipment/devices that the FAIU team employs when reconstructing an accident scene.
