Parking Ordinances: Business Area - Downtown
Ordinance 22-12 Overtime Parking
The Downtown Business Area is located at the center of Hillsdale--from about Broadway & Piermont Avenue south to the Westwood border, including Hillsdale Avenue west toward Patterson Street. Broadway, Hillsdale Avenue, and the respective side-streets are all marked with signs restricting the length of time a vehicle may be parked there. These Parking Zones range from 1, 2, 3, and 4 hour limits.
A Parking Zone is only good for use once. That is to say, a vehicle may use the time limit allowed for a particular zone, but then the vehicle must be moved to another Parking Zone, not just another space within that initial zone.
For example, if a car was parked for one hour in the One Hour Parking Zone on Broadway, between Hillsdale Avenue and Park Avenue, the car must be moved to another Parking Zone, like the One Hour Parking Zone across the street or down the block. The car cannot remain parked on Broadway between Hillsdale Avenue and Park Avenue because one hour has elapsed and the vehicle is now in violation if it remains anywhere within that One Hour Parking Zone between Hillsdale Avenue and Park Avenue.
The same holds true for any other Parking Zone of any other time limit. Vehicles in violation must be moved to another Parking Zone to avoid receiving a summons pursuant to Boro Ordinance 22-12.
Ordinance 22-11C Parking without a Current Sticker
The Boro has several parking lots. Two of these lots are the Boro's Municipal Parking Lots--one is located on Hillsdale Avenue between Patterson Street and Broadway, the other is located on Hillsdale Avenue next to the Firehouse. These lots require a current Boro Parking Sticker for parking.
Ordinance 22-17D Parking without Sticker in NJ Transit Pkg Lots
The other parking lots, the NJ Transit Parking Lots, one located next to the King's Shopping Plaza, and the other next to Hillsdale Paint on Winkler Way, require a Borough of Hillsdale Authorized NJ Transit Parking Sticker weekdays until 10:00 a.m., after which there is open parking (no sticker required).
Ordinance 22-17 Failed Payment for a Paid Commuter Space
Finally, the Boro's NJ Transit Commuter Pay Lot, located parallel to the NJ Transit Train Station in the center of town, has marked spaces whereby motorists can park their vehicle and pay an all-day rate of $3.00 for parking while riding the NJ Transit Pascack Valley Line. These spaces are limited, and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The collection box for the $3.00 fee is located on the Train Platform.
Ordinance 22-34 Parking in a Fire Zone
Parking in a Fire Zone is dangerous and expensive! The Boro has several Fire Zones marked at the Shop Rite Plaza, Kings Shopping Plaza, various Downtown businesses, and schools. In these areas, parking is strictly prohibited, and doings so will result in an expensive fine and a MANDATORY court appearance.
Parking Ordinances: Residential - Business - Boro-wide
Ordinance 22-10 Overnight Parking
The Boro restricts the parking of vehicles overnight on any street from 2:00 a.m. - 6:00 a.m. If a car must be parked on the street overnight, contact the Police Desk at (201)664-4200 to request permission.
Ordinance 22-24 Parking During Snow Emergency
During snow season, parking on any street or Boro Parking Lot is prohibited when the streets are snow covered. Vehicles in violation may be subject to a summons and towed away at the owner's expense.
