The Hillsdale PD's Traffic Bureau would like to remind motorists that the traffic pattern on Piermont Avenue, in front of the Pascack Valley High School, consists of a 'Marked Turning Course,' which is a specially painted LEFT TURN ONLY LANE. This lane is for eastbound traffic, allowing cars to safely make a left turn into the PVHS main entrance. In addition, there has been a 'Safety Island' added, which is a specially painted area consisting of angled yellow lines in the center of the roadway--this channels traffic and allows for pedestrians to safely wait in the roadway while attempting to cross the span of Piermont Avenue.
The special LEFT TURN ONLY LANE and the 'Safety Island' are added to benefit both motorists and pedestrians, increasing safety and the expeditious flow of traffic. The following special considerations should be kept in mind:
- a LEFT TURN ONLY LANE requires all vehicles within that lane to make the left turn; it may not be used for passing, etc. It is designed only for eastbound traffic making a left turn into PVHS.
- the 'Safety Island' may not be occupied by a vehicle, nor can a vehicle drive over/through the 'Safety Island ;' it is designed only for use by pedestrians crossing the span of the roadway.
- Piermont Avenue, in front of PVHS is a School Zone, and therefore is a 25 MPH Zone during school hours/when children are present. Speeding is dangerous especially in this area.
- due to the new traffic pattern, the curbs on both sides of Piermont Avenue in front of PVHS have been marked as NO PARKING ZONES ; to allow the free flow of traffic, vehicles cannot park along the curbline there; vehicles parked there are blocking traffic and subject to being towed away at the owners expense.
