The HPD is proud to have two of its own officers holding the position of Drug Recognition Expert.  A D.R.E. is a highly trained and certified police officer who can detect the use, abuse, and presence of narcotics and controlled substances in the human body. 

P.O. Novakowski not only serves the Boro of Hillsdale and surrounding towns as a D.R.E.   P.O. Novakowski also assists training and instructing new D.R.E.'s .  P.O, Mckeever a member of our Traffic Bureau and a member of the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office Fatal Accident Investigation Unit is our second D.R.E. and will also asssit this department and surrounding agencies with D.R.E. evaluations.

As  Drug Recognition Experts, P.O. Novakowski and P.O, McKeever often play an integral part in identifying illicit substances like cocaine, crack, ecstasy, marijuana, heroine, and other dangerous narcotics.  In their work as a D.R.E's, P.O. Novakowski  and P.O. McKeever can quickly identify when someone is under the influence of a controlled substance.  In continuing to rid the community of harmful drugs, a D.R.E. is highly important.  

Drug abuse is a problem that has plauged the United States for decades.  Through education and enforcement, police departments across the country have impacted the drug trade and the abuse of narcotics/perscription drugs.  In short, drug abuse harms the human body in severe and permanent ways, and--of course--it is illegal.
