The Hillsdale Police Department Auxiliary Police Unit consists of about fifteen volunteers whom, with special training from the Bergen County Police Academy, serve the Boro in a variety of ways.
These men and women volunteer their free time to assist the HPD's regular police officers with select duties like traffic control, crowd control, 'security' details, and overall police presence. The Auxiliary Police, or Police Reserves, are uniformed members of the HPD, and act as additional sets of eyes and ears, helping the department handle large tasks like parades, carnivals, road closures, and other emergent circumstances as they arise. The Auxiliary Police are appointed by the Chief of Police and are granted certain police powers under NJ law.
The Auxiliaries have all undergone a rigorous background check, and completed a comprehensive course at the Bergen County Police Academy covering topics like traffic/highway safety, traffic control, crowd control, patrol tactics, and other useful classes.
The men and women of the HPD Auxiliary Unit can be seen throughout the Boro at special events, assisting with Church Traffic on Sundays, and also at emergency road closures or the like.
